Church History of Markham Peoples Community Church

In April 2000, our first official Sunday worship service at the Chinese Cultural Centre Of Greater Toronto in Scarborough. Only seven seniors attended this service.

As we had grown by numbers, by May 2001,  the church moved to 5800 Sheppard Avenue East in Scarborough and joined the Free Methodist Church in Canada. The church formally named itself Malvern Chinese Free Methodist Church. The Morning Tea Fellowship was one of the major outreach programs for church growth. Senior fellowship, adult fellowship,  children and youth ministries were established. Church picnic, Christmas celebration and Chinese New Year celebration attracted many to come to the church. Knowing that there were many new immigrants in the neighbourhood, the church worked with a few settlement and health care agencies to provide many social programs, seminars and settlement services to the new immigrants. This further enhanced the growth of the church.

With a bigger congregation, with the donations from brothers and sisters, in April 2011, the church was able to buy a commercial property and, in 2013, rezoned it to place of worship. It is a 6 1/2 acres of land with a building of 35,000 square feet. As we moved into this new location, 22 Esna Park Drive in Markham in April 2011, the church changed the name to Markham Free Methodist Church.

Having sufficient space, we started our children's summer camp in 2012, and expanded our children's ministry. We set up kids club and kids band. We also had children art and craft programs on Sunday. The Children Ministry became the core ministry of the church.

It was God given vision to build a community centre alongside the church in order to expand the Kingdom of God and to serve our communities, The construction of our community centre, called Markham Wesley Centre, commenced in 2012. This community centre has a space of 15,000 square feet. It has a full size gymnasium for various sport activities, a mirrored and sound proof walls for dancing and singing practices, a well equipped computer room for different software and hardware training, a large multi purpose room for all activities, and a few classroom for different interest classes. Many social and spiritual programs were initiated. It is a popular recreation hub for the residence of Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough and North York. We had over 3300 registered members and, on average, over 300 participants usage per day.

In August 2018, the expansion of the church building was completed. Now our worship hall can provide a total seating of 731 and our chapel has enough space to seat 160 people. We became a non denominational church and changed its name to Markham Peoples Community Church. We hired more pastors and staff and added many more spiritual and community programs as well as many caring initiatives were established.
